북촌과 연결되는 좌표를 상상한다면 공간의 특징이 자연스레 설명된다. 일터도 주거공간도 아닌 송현을 찾는 사람들의 욕구는 자극이나 무용담이 아니라 근사한 경험과 도시 속 안정감이다. 허나 분명한 것은, 친구나 가족과 놀이 공원을 찾아 떠났을 때와 사뭇 다른 태도다.

가장 가까운 문화행위는 산책이다. 천천히 또는 꼼꼼히 살피는 걸음 걸음에 사색이 채워지게 마련이다. 그리고 우연히 만나는 예술. 어슬렁 거리다 마주친 석상. 걸음이 피곤할 무렵 공간의 정상에서 바라본 인왕산의 풍광.

산책자만이 누릴 수 있는 최적의 위치인 셈이다.

Considering this building’s location within the Bukchon area, its unique features are easily understood.

Since Songhyeon is neither a place to work nor a place to live, people who visit this place are not looking for excitement or adventures, but for great experiences and a sense of security in the city. However, it is clear that the attitude that prevails is quite different from when you go to an amusement park with friends or family.

Taking a stroll is one of the most common forms of cultural behavior. With every slow and meticulous step, reflection inevitably fills the journey. Stumbling upon art by chance. Bumping into a stone statue while wandering about. Taking a moment to enjoy the view of Mount Inwang from the building’s roof ridge whenever we need a break from walking.

It is the perfect location that only the urban flaneur can enjoy.

개별 유물과 작품은 값을 입에 올려선 안될 것이 분명하지만, 송현땅에 오는 시간 속에 가격이 매겨지는 수모를 겪었다. 유물과 작품을 감상하려 찾아 오지만 여전히 재벌의 보물창고에 무엇이 들어 있는지 궁금하지 않았다고 자신있게 말할 수 있는가. 부자의 곶간과 역사로 기록되어야 하는 문화유산에서 우리가 주목해야 하는 것이 무엇일까. ‘공공연한 비밀’이라는 패러독스로 인해 유물과 작품이 빛을 잃지 않을 수 있는 방법을 찾는다. 호기심 충족을 위해 마련하는 자리가 아니길 바라는 마음이 담긴 구조가 필요하다. 공간의 한 가운데는 나무와 유리로 지어진 거대한 구조물이며 유물은 무작위로 배치된다.

에포케(ΕΠΟΧΗ/EPOCHE). 즉 판단중지의 전시구조물이다.

이 공간으로 들어와서는 개별 작품을 있는 그대로 볼 수 있어야 한다. 소유와 유통의 배경이 아니며 의도 없이 중립으로 존재하는 구조물을 만난다.

유물과 작품은 그 자체로 송현 땅에서 온전하다.

Although individual artifacts and artworks are priceless, they have the indignity of having a tag price attached to them by the time they arrive to the grounds of Songhyeon. We can wonder whether the people who come to see these artifacts and artworks are actually more interested in the fact that this is a chaebol’s treasure trove. What should we be looking for between the treasure chests of the rich and the cultural heritage that should be recorded as history? Despite the paradox of ‘open secrets’, we are looking for a way for these works and artifacts not to lose their value.

We decided to call this space Epoché (έποχή), it is an exhibition structure that suspends judgment,

a massive structure made of wood and glass in which the artifacts are placed randomly. When the visitors enter this space, they should be able to see the individual works as they are. They discover a structure that exists neutrally, without intention, without the background of ownership or distribution. The artifacts and artworks remain intact on the grounds of Songhyeon.
